Marcus High School Theatre Arts Department is proud to present Alice in Wonderland, the stage adaptation by Brainerd Duffield. Audiences are invited to the children’s world of make-believe, where the impossible becomes possible, the unreal, real, and where the heights of adventure are limited only by the depths of imagination. The show runs November 5-8.

Follow the young, imaginative Alice as she chases the beleaguered White Rabbit down the rabbit-hole to encounter some of the most enduring and strangest characters in all of literature. The moralizing Duchess, the Mad Hatter, the rotund and rollicking Tweedledee and Tweedledum, the diabolical Queen of Hearts, and the philosophical Cheshire Cat are only some of the characters that you will meet in this theatrical interpretation of Carroll’s classic works, Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass. In the photo are Kole Franklin as the Mad Hatter, Morgan Andersen as the Dormouse, Jessica Wilson as Alice, and Luke Swinney as the March Hare.

Children are also invited to attend a Mad Tea Party before the Saturday, November 7 matinee starting at 1 p.m. Tickets for this event are $10 for children and $15 for adults. This includes the tea party and a ticket to the show. They will have a chance to meet and chat with the characters, tour the theater and stay for the show. Reservations for the Mad Tea Party are taken up to 24 hours before the event. Tickets include the tea party and the show. For Mad Tea Party ticket prices and reservations, please email marcustheatretickets@yahoo.com.

Performances of Alice in Wonderland are November 5, 6, 7 and 8 at the Larry Sigler Auditorium at Marcus High School located at 5707 Morriss Road in Flower Mound. Show times are 7:30 on Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 2:30 on Saturday and Sunday. Ticket prices are $12 for adults, $8 for seniors and students and $5 for children 5 and under. Located down Highway 26 directly across the street from the Gaylord Texan, the lodge, as it’s name implies, offers 402 lodge-themed rooms, 10,000 square feet of meeting space and an extremely large water park.

The highlight of the hotel is an 80,000 square foot indoor water park as well as a unique large outdoor pool and water slide area. Great Wolf will cater primarily to families and leisure travelers. We also expect to see the Great Wolf as an alternative for business travelers with group meetings at the Texan who may bring along their families to enjoy the Wolf’s recreational opportunities. Of course the Wolf offers other amenities such as restaurants and Elements, an Aveda concept spa.

We started out putting a few lights on our home many years ago, and it grew and grew as our kids grew. Now we hang lit wreaths in our windows and call it a day! But we’re grateful many of you go all out with the lights. They were being strung all over Flower Mound this weekend. We hope to get out and catch pictures of some of the best, but in the meantime, thought we’d share one incredible location a short drive up SH-121 in Frisco.

We went to see them last year and were amazed. This year, they’ve added even more with 65,000 lights, all computer controlled, and synchronized to music you can enjoy by tuning your car radio to 92.9FM.

It’s Free, but there may be a wait at times. Cars tend to pull up on the cul-de-sac in front of their home and park through a couple of song sets in groups of roughly 5-8 vehicles, then hopefully drive away so others can pull up. Visit http://www.friscochristmas.com for hours and directions.

Jeff Trykoski the homeowner is also credited with lighting Frisco Square (North Dallas Tollway and Main Street in Frisco). Presented by Frisco Square and NBC 5i you’ll find an incredible light show strung across the roadway connecting a series of buildings and the Frisco Town Hall.

For More information click here. Be sure to check their nightly schedule before making the drive.

There’s always something going on in the DFW area, but sometimes it’s hard to find different things to do on a whim. Of course movies are an easy choice, then there’s dining out and sporting events. Here are a few more suggestions.

This report is updated at the beginning of every weekend with additional updates throughout the weekend so be sure to check in often for the latest.

It’s officially pumpkin time! We all sense the change in weather and enjoyed the drop in temperatures, at least in the mornings! Yes, it’s still strangely warm hitting the 90′s in the first week of October, but nonetheless, the Pumpkins, Patches, and Haunted Houses have arrived.

_____________________________
Visit a local Pumpkin Places to Pick your Preferred Plump Pumpkin! I love saying that.

If you’ve lived long in Flower Mound, you know that pumpkin shopping is more than just going to the store. It’s a short drive into the country…well almost the country, to the Pumpkin Patch or Pumpkin Village, located right next to each other on FM1171 just West of Bridlewood before you get to Lusk. Both will offer entertainment and recreational events for whole family, especially the kids. Each offers something unique such as face painting, hay rides, hay bale mazes, petting zoo, hay pyramids, teepees, pony rides, picnic tables, bounce houses, slides and oh, of course, pumpkins!
Last weekend’s Grand Opening was reportedly a success, according to center officials with over 20,000 shoppers visiting the new center over the 3 day grand opening. The property is very nice, but limited on restaurant choices at present. Pot Belly Sandwiches, Corner Bakery and Texas Roast are open with Rockfish coming this weekend and Snuffers soon too. The AMC Movie Theatre is scheduled for an early December opening. Approximately 35 stores opened and by this time next year, they hope the property will be built out at around 70 stores.

There are 34 Art-Deco gondolas each capable of holding 8 passengers, covering 1,800 feet traveling 65 feet above the ground.

Of course the centerpiece of the Fair is the annual football game, shootout, red-river rivalry, Big Red-Crimson Orange match…yep, the Oklahoma-Texas football game played in the Cotton Bowl at Fair Park.

The State Fair of Texas is the only Fair in the country to include a full blown auto show. It includes over 300,000 square feet of new model vehicles, two buildings, a Truck Zone and a Test Drive Track. The State Fair has been the site for several international launches including the 2007 Chevy Tahoe, the 2007 Ford Sporttrac and the 2008 Chevy Silverado.

MOVIES

The box office winners last weekend were:

1. The Game Plan (new)
2. The Kingdom (new)
3. Resident Evil: Extinction (1)
4. Good Luck Chuck (2)
5. 3:10 to Yuma (4)

________

It looks like everyone was either looking for a relaxing good time of comedy or someone’s in love with Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson, pulling in almost $23 Million in it’s opening weekend. Jamie Foxx’s action movie, The Kingdom, came in a distant second with $17 Million. Resident Evil: Extinction and the rest brought in less than $8 Mill. . The weekend brought 2 new movies into the top 5 box office producers. We’ve seen Good Luck Chuck which was entertaining, but definitely strong R, bordering on NC-17 and 3:10 to Yuma which is great as a modern-produced western.

The movie also features Jennifer Garner, Chris Cooper, Jason Bateman and Jeremy Piven.

Good Luck Chuck
Amanda Bynes stars in a modern retelling of Snow White, as gorgeous freshman Sydney White, goes to college to pledge her late mom’s once-dignified sorority. But while surviving the pledging process wrought by an evil campus witch Rachel, Syd finds out this version of sisterhood isn’t remotely what it’s cracked up to be.
The Brave One
New York radio host Erica Bain (Jodie Foster) has a life that she loves and a fiancé she adores. All of it is taken from her when a brutal attack leaves Erica badly wounded and her fiancé dead. Unable to move past the tragedy, Erica begins prowling the city streets at night to track down the men she holds responsible, dishing out Vigilante justice as well as any man could.

Our Review: Well Acted, but Jodie Foster can pull off about any role. Violent, which seems consistent with Ms. Foster’s last several movies, and somewhat difficult to watch a few scenes due to the graphic nature of the violence. Even though most of the scenarios weren’t realistic, you could feel her character’s emotions and empathize with her objectives.

Mr. Woodcock

John Farley (Seann William Scott), author of a best-selling self-help book about letting go of the past, violates his own advice when he returns to his small hometown to receive the community’s highest honor. While there, John learns, to his horror, that his widowed mother, Beverly (Susan Sarandon), is engaged to be married to none other than Mr. Woodcock (Billy Bob Thornton), the gym teacher whose sadistic exploits were the bane of John’s youth. While casting is good, critics give this movie an average C++…but what do they know!

Our Review: Funny. Billy Bob Thornton took his character over the top…almost all the time. Susan Sarandon was surprisingly funny and light-hearted as opposed to her usual character. Seann William Scott (American Pie famous), is starting to develop his own acting personality, but is he forever stereotyped as a corny-comedic actor? Their chemistry was well presented.

_______
Eastern Promises

Naomi Watts is a London midwife who looks into the death of a patient, putting her in the sights of a ruthless Russian mobster. Critics give this one a B average, though it’s probably not a high-volume revenue generator.

_______

In The Valley of Elah, stars a couple of our favorite actors, Tommy Lee Jones, Charlize Theron and Susan Sarandon. This is the story of a war veteran (Tommy Lee Jones), his wife (Susan Sarandon) and the search for their son, a soldier who recently returned from Iraq but has mysteriously gone missing, and the police detective (Charlize Theron) who helps in the investigation. We like the storyline and the actors, and hope this one is a success.

3:10 to Yuma is yep, just what it sounds like-a Western from the director of Walk the Line. Can a western make a comeback? Well with Christian Bale as a struggling rancher who agrees to help transfer Russell Crowe, a notorious outlaw, into the hands of authorities, it’s got potential.

Our Review: The best western movie we’ve seen this year. LOL. Classic Good vs Bad Guys. Crowe hits it home with his character, the Bad Guy of course, but with several redeeming qualities that don’t quite offset his evil nature. It’s actually kinda odd seeing a modern produced western. So much more visual. Christian Bale, and especially his son, Logan Lerman showed the importance of a Dad in the eyes of his son. We were really impressed with Lerman, only 15, but he’s got a long list of credentials including What Women Want, Jack and Bobby, Hoot and more.

_______
Halloween, yep, the movie studios are thinking of those scary days already! In this rework, director Rob Zombie re-imagines the 1978 horror slasher classic, with Tyler Mane starring as masked serial killer Michael Myers. After being committed for 17 years, Myers, now a grown man and still very dangerous, is mistakenly released from the mental institution (where he was committed as a 10 year old) and he immediately returns to Haddonfield, where he wants to find his baby sister, Laurie. Anyone who crosses his path is in mortal danger. We’re not excited.

Founded in 1983 (one year after John Belushi’s untimely death) and STILL going strong for 24 years now, backed by a hot 8-piece showband (4 horns, 4 rhythm players), the stars of the show J.W.
The performance starts at 6:30 in Old Town Lewisville, directly in front of the new Lewisville City Hall at Poydras and Main.

FM Theatre-The Effects of Gamma Rays on Man-In-The-Moon Marigolds – Sept 20-Sept 30, 2007

Performed by the Flower Mound Performing Arts Theatre in Parker Square, This Pulitzer Prize winning play by Paul Zindel, is the story of Beatrice and her daughters, Ruth and Matilda. A widowed eccentric, Beatrice is looking for her life in the classified ads while all about her is the rubble of an unkempt house. All she needs is the right opportunity, she says puffing on a cigarette. Poorly equipped to survive the vagaries of modern life, she has nonetheless always managed to muddle through. Ruth, epileptic and making her way through the rebellious phase of adolescence, seems doomed to make the same mistakes as her mother. Quiet Matilda, on the other hand, seeks refuge in her animals and her schoolwork. The play’s title is the subject of Matilda’s science project at school and serves as a metaphor for life — how some are able to find opportunity in adversity and thrive and how some succumb when the burden becomes too heavy.

MOVIES

The box office winners last weekend were:

1. The Brave One (new)
2. 3:10 to Yuma (1)
3. Mr. Woodcock (new)
4. Superbad (3)
5. Dragon Wars (new)

________

As we had predicted last week, The Brave One starring Jodie Foster took #1 in the Box office with $13.5 million. The weekend brought 3 new movies into the top 5 box office producers. One big surprise to us was Dragon Wars, but then again, it only produced $5 Million, barely edging out The Bourne Ultimatum and Halloween so that indicates a generally slow box office weekend overall. Superbad hung in the top 5 for the fifth straight week.

_______

NEW THIS WEEKEND

Good Luck Chuck
A man breaks up with his long-time girlfriend only to see her get engaged to the next guy she dates. The same pattern occurs with his next girlfriend, and continues to repeat. All of a sudden he finds himself becoming a lucky charm for women, who all want to date him…with one goal in mind. This is our pick for weekend box office winner.

Sydney White
Amanda Bynes stars in a modern retelling of Snow White, as gorgeous freshman Sydney White, goes to college to pledge her late mom’s once-dignified sorority. But while surviving the pledging process wrought by an evil campus witch Rachel, Syd finds out this version of sisterhood isn’t remotely what it’s cracked up to be. Banished to a condemned house on Greek Row, Syd finds her rightful place with a band of seven very socially challenged guys. With the help of one lovestruck frat boy named Tyler, she and the doofs campaign to take over the student government. Fighting for the rights of misfits everywhere, Syd and her “gang” revolutionize the system, once and for all.

Resident Evil: Extinction
In a new installment in the Resident Evil series, Milla Jovovich returns as Alice, now in hiding in the Nevada desert, once again joins forces with Carlos Olivera and L.J., along with new survivors try to eliminate the deadly virus that threatens to make every human being one of the undead. Since being captured by the Umbrella Corporation, Alice has been subjected to biogenic experimentation and becomes genetically altered, now, of course, having much needed super-human strengths, senses and dexterity. These skills, and more, will be needed if anyone is to remain alive.

_______

Continuing this Weekend

_______

Mr.

_______

Across The Universe is a movie that it seems like we’ve been seeing previews for a year or so now. That’s usually a bad sign meaning they’ve run it past a couple of test audiences and had to rework it several times to make people like it.

It’s a flashback to the 60′s psychedelic romantic musical told mainly through numerous Beatles songs performed by the characters. A young man from Liverpool comes to America during the Vietnam War to find his father. He winds up in Greenwich Village, where he falls in love with an American girl who has grown up sheltered in the suburbs. Together they experience the sweeping changes of America in the late 60′s. It’s long at 2hr 13min and the critics give it a B- average. We’ll see! Not sure if we can survive sitting through this one ourselves, but it is the Beatles music. It’s actually in limited release to only a few theaters at present.

_______

Another limited release movie this weekend is In The Valley of Elah, with a couple of our favorite actors, Tommy Lee Jones, Charlize Theron and Susan Sarandon.

_______

The teen movie, Superbad, has now racked over $111 Million. This is an example of teen buying power these days! Actually, the critics and public give this movie an average B+ rating. In the story, two co-dependent high school guys want to hook up with girls before they graduate and go off to different colleges, but, after a calamitous night just trying to buy alcohol for a school party, overcoming their separation anxiety becomes a greater challenge than getting the girls. Note it is an R-Rated film.

Ok, We’ve seen Superbad, and as mentioned, the storyline fits just what most teenage boys think about-duh, but is full of laughs and ultimately has a solid message in the end.

After 6 weeks on the top 5, The Bourne Ultimatum slid to #7. It has generated $216 Million! In perhaps the best of the Bourne series, Matt Damon portrays a government-trained killer Jason Bourne, a man without a past on the run from the CIA. This time Bourne returns home to face head on those chasing him. The consequences are disastrous, but for whom?

Our Review: This may be the best IMHO of the Bourne series. The action is great, the stunts incredible and the sites shown around the world are awesome. An Evening With Charles Langley – Britteny Sage Lindt Benefit Concert - Saturday, Sept 15, 7pm

Charles Langley is a Plano native with a voice described as one that can tear your heart out. And Friday night, this star of the Broadway Stage will be singing his heart out at a Charity Fundraiser sponsored by Capital One for the Britteny Sage Lindt Charity. Charles has the ability to make people cry and then have them tapping their feet all in one evening. His talent is entirely appropriate for the evening given the somber reason for the concert, but the cause and his voice can lift us all to a higher plateau. This will be one of his only concerts in the DFW area this year so don’t miss the opportunity to be touched by his voice and be a part of this benefit.

Britteny was a 15 year old Highland Village resident, a Marcus High School Cheerleader whose light was dimmed far too early in August, 2006 by an alleged drunk/reckless driver in a bizarre boating accident, but her family has vowed to give cause to the tragic loss. The Lindt family created the Britteny Sage Lindt Fund as a comprehensive campaign to raise awareness and to enact changes to the laws regulating alcohol use and abuse and unsafe watercraft & motor vehicle operation.

Family and Friends of Brittney ARE making a difference. Here’s a couple of notes from their website.

01/07 – 2 scholarships in Britteny’s name, were set up for Marcus High school students. In Jan. 2008 we will start another available for all of LISD.

03/07 – 4 bills were presented to the Legislature to improve water safety. 3 have passed through the Senate committee to be voted on, and the 4th is still in negotiation. If all 4 of these bills pass, statistically, the number of boating accidents will decrease by 70% within the next 6 years, in Texas.

04/07 – The Britteny Sage Lindt Fund donated a 21 ft. Sea Ray boat to the Parks & Wildlife for their “Nobody’s Waterproof” campaign which will travel the state raising awareness of boating safety.

Fall Festivals and Activities Kick In!

Grapevine Grapefest, Sept 13-16th

We love Grapevine Grapefest. It’s the closest ‘large-scale’, yet hometown festival to us. The shops on Main street have great charm and the merchants are extremely friendly and hospitable. It’s a great opportunity to wander aimlessly down mainstreet without having to worry about vehicular traffic and see some of the architecture of Grapevine that dates back nearly a century. There’s multiple stages with entertainment from opening to closing each day.

There are great arts, craft, clothing and jewelry exhibits, good food, and oh, did we forget…WINE TASTING! Numerous wine tasting ‘stations’ are located up and down the street. One of our favorites, is always right on Main. D’Vine Wine is located at 409 S. Main. Stop in to try 4 samples of their in-store made wine for only $5.00. They’ll also give you a card good for a 10% discount on any purchased until Nov 30th. Or, stop in the Soda Jerk at 405 S. Main for an old-fashioned ice cream treat.

There are also special events such as a grape-stomping competition, cooking demonstrations, peoples-choice tasting events, champagne courtyard.

There are numerous automobile exhibits from Hummer, Saturn, Ford and others. While we didn’t wander into the carnival area, there are many children and teen rides for every level of thrill-seeker.

It was no surprise to see 3:10 to Yuma take the top box office spot last weekend. Surprising is to find it was a very slow weekend only producing $14 Million. Halloween still hung in there at number 2.

Continuing this weekend

3:10 to Yuma is yep, just what it sounds like-a Western from the director of Walk the Line. Can a western make a comeback? Well with Christian Bale as a struggling rancher who agrees to help transfer Russell Crowe, a notorious outlaw, into the hands of authorities, it’s got potential and we expect to go check it out.

In Shoot’Em Up, Clive Owen, as Mr. Smith, a mysterious loner, teams up with an unlikely ally to protect a newborn baby from a determined criminal who hunts them throughout the bowels of the city. You can guess what to expect from the title alone.

It has slide to #5, but no one is complaining. After 6 weeks in the theaters, it has generated $210 Million!

Our favorite line in the movie: “Because if you were in your office right now, we would be having this conversation Face to Face”

Keep checking. We always add more! There’s a lot going on this weekend, and next week is just as good! There’s the Addison Oktoberfest and the Plano Balloon Festival, just for starters. It’s a great time to get out and enjoy the fall weather…even though it is sliding back into the 90′s in spite of earlier lower reports by the local weathermen!
