If you’re like us, you often wonder what to do on the weekend. There’s always something going on in the DFW area, but sometimes it’s hard to find different things to do on a whim. Of course movies are an easy choice, then there’s dining out and sporting events. Here are a few more suggestions. For “What To Do” for the current weekend, click here.

Highland Village Balloon Festival - Unfortunately, due to the rain earlier in the summer (remember?), it was canceled, but there is the North Texas State Fair in Denton which may be a good alternative. Running August 17-25, there’s a whole week of fun including a carnival, rodeos, horse and livestock shows, contests and all the things that make a state fair fun, but on a smaller, more comfortable level and in our area.
The Fair is at 2217 N Carroll Blvd in Denton, TX 76201-1833

New this year include backpacks with wheels, provided they have straps permitting them to be worn on the back. MOVIES
The box office winners last weekend were:
1. Rush Hour 3 - (New)
2. The Bourne Ultimatum - (1)
3. The Simpson’s Movie - (2)
4. Stardust - (New)
5. Hairspray - (6)

Rush Hour with Jackie Chan and Chris Tucker did an impressive job of cleaning up in the theaters last week in spite of critics giving it a generally low score, so it will likely stay in the top rankings this weekend as well.
For new openings this weekend, the leader is expected to be The Invasion, starring Nicole Kidman and Daniel Craig who learn the truth about a shocking extraterrestrial epidemic in this latest ‘Body Snatchers’ remake. The mysterious crash of the space shuttle leads to the terrifying discovery that there is something alien within the wreckage. Those who come in contact with it are changing in ominous and inexplicable ways. The movie has nothing to do with the ill-fated Invasion TV series, and is officially not a 3rd movie remake, but…
Superbad, new this weekend covers the exploits of two co-dependent high school guys want to hook up with girls before they graduate and go off to different colleges, but, after a calamitous night just trying to buy alcohol for a school party, overcoming their separation anxiety becomes a greater challenge than getting the girls.
Continuing this weekend is the Sci-Fi/Fantasy, Stardust starring Robert De Niro and Michelle Pfeiffer, a young man named Tristan (Charlie Cox) tries to win the heart of Victoria (Sienna Miller), the beautiful but cold object of his desire, by going on a quest to retrieve a fallen star. His journey takes him to a mysterious and forbidden land beyond the walls of his village. On his odyssey, Tristan finds the star, which has transformed into a striking girl named Yvaine (Claire Danes).
UPDATE: 8/10/07 - We saw Stardust today. It’s a romantic fantasy, and we loved it. De Niro during his brief appearances, practically stole the scenes. Where the Rush Hour theater was about a third full, Stardust was packed. Go see it!
________

Among last week releases, Daddy Day Camp barely hit the charts and is probably on a fast trip to the DVD burner.
The Bourne Ultimatum should hold it’s on this weekend as well, remaining in the top 5. Matt Damon portrays a government-trained killer Jason Bourne, still a man without a past and on the run from the CIA. This time Bourne returns home to face head on those chasing him. The consequences are disastrous, but for whom?
The action is great and the sites shown around the world are incredible. Our favorite line in the movie: “Because if you were in your office right now, we would be having this conversation Face to Face”

It’s interesting that Hairspray actually moved up a notch in revenue last week. It may be one of those that grows as it develops a word of mouth following. Of course, with John Travolta playing a woman, how can you lose? Hairspray is a musical about a plus-sized girl with a big heart and a passion for dancing who dreams of appearing on a local TV dance party.
Becoming Jane, starring Anne Hathaway and James MacAvoy has moved into a few more theatres so may pick up interest. In this 18th-century love story of emerging young writer Jane Austen, she is a feisty 20-year-old emerging writer who already sees a world beyond class and commerce, beyond pride and prejudice, and dreams of doing what was then nearly unthinkable - marrying for love.

DVD RENTAL RECOMMENDATION
We have a winner for new DVD release this week. Wild Hogs is one of those movies that the critics hated and the fans loved. Starring John Travolta, Tim Allen, William Macy and Martin Lawrence, a group of middle-aged friends decide to rev up their routine suburban lives with a freewheeling motorcycle trip.
If you’re a fan of the original TV show Bewitched, the first five seasons are now being released on DVD. Another movie new to DVD that was just in theaters last month, but we all said we would wait for the DVD of is Vacancy. It had a couple of good actors, Kate Beckinsale and Luke Wilson who’s car breaks down in the middle of nowhere and discover the no-tell motel they are in has hidden cameras and their very room was the site of a low-budget slasher movie they’re watching on TV, panic ensues and they struggle to get out alive before they become the next ‘movie stars’.
