Possible Mountain Lion Sighting- FM1171 & High

Mountain Lion Flower Mound’s Animal Services and Parks and Recreation Department were recently notified of a Mountain Lion sighting near the area of 1171 and High Road. The lion was seen on a hiking trail and ran off shortly after being spotted; there was no reported contact with persons or animals residing in the neighborhood.

Mountain Lions are native to Texas, however sighting are rare. Mountain lion sightings have been reported around Grapevine Lake for more than 10 years. The Town of Flower Mound would like to alert residents of this possibility and make sure they are aware of safety precautions to take if they ever become face to face with this animal.

Mountain lions, commonly known as a cougars, panthers, or pumas, are generally calm, quiet, and elusive.  Attacks on humans are rare and usually occur in areas with a high population of cougars and where the human population enters into the lion’s habitat.  If by chance, you come face to face with a cougar, the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department recommends that you:

•    Do not approach the lion
•    Do not run
•    Look as big as possible
•    Keep children in sight and close to you
•    Back away slowly, keeping eye contact
•    Fight back if attacked
