FLOWER MOUND – Animal Services Officers responded to a call in the 3500 block of Sunnyview Lane on September 6 in reference to an injured fox that was discovered by a resident who lived in the neighborhood. The fox was believed to be rabid and removed from the location by Animal Services. The animal died while being transported back to the animal shelter and sent to the lab for testing. Animal Services was notified today the fox tested positive for rabies on September 10.
The fox did not come into contact with any resident or pet despite an earlier report that it had been in contact with two dogs. Animal Services located the owner and dogs in question and verified no contact occurred. This is the third reported case of rabies in Flower Mound in 2008. Two cases were reported in 2007 and one case was reported in 2006.
State law and Flower Mound ordinance mandates that all dogs and cats receive annual rabies vaccinations. Although the law does not require livestock vaccination, immunizations are also available for horses and livestock and are recommended by Flower Mound Animal Services.

Direct contact with a wild animal by a human or pet should be reported immediately to Animal Services.
