Popular anywhere in Texas…and beyond, guacamole has become a food staple at our house. There are probably as many variations for guacamole are there are Texans. For us, speed and convenience is important, along with not requiring any special ingredients we might have to run to the store to get.
Avocado size and prices vary by location. Generally, we like getting ours from Sam’s Club or Central Market. Sams always has a good price on the larger ones, but sometimes it’s hard finding them ripe there. Ripe avocados give slightly when you gently squeeze them, but aren’t totally mushy. (Tip: To ripen, put them in a Paper sandwich bag on countertop for a couple of days.) Here’s our quick and easy recipe.
Ingredients
- 1 large ripe avocado
- 2 Teaspoons of lemon juice (Fresh or RealLemon) to taste
- 1 Teaspoon of garlic salt (more or less to taste)
Chop and Mash the avocado, mix in lemon juice and garlic salt! Complicated Huh! Ok, here’s a slightly more refined recipe. We’ve made it too, but we tend to go for the simplicity.

Since all Texans are born with an innate guacamole-making skill, Linda’s guacamole isn’t very complicated. Linda says the secret to her guacamole is grating the white onion, "to get the onion juice in there." Try the recipe Oprah raved about! Make Lance Armstrong’s mom’s guacamole tonight.
