Elections in most cities this time of year are usually ho-humm, but not so for Flower Mound where voters turned out in huge numbers. There were reports of residents waiting over an hour to cast their vote. Even for early voting in recent weeks, reports of 10-15 deep voters in line were common.

Challengers for council positions running on a passionate platform of slowing gas activities and variances in the city brought out the passion of voters and achieved a shake-up of local leadership.

Melissa Northern defeated incumbent Jody Smith for Mayor

Al Filidoro remained as the incumbent in the Place 2 Council Seat

Steve Lyda defeated opponents for Place 4 Council Seat

Northern, Filidoro, and Lyda campaigned as the “NFL” team. Unofficial results show voters supported the trio who campaigned united by a significent margin with Northern currently at 59%, Filidoro at 59%, and Lyda at 61% of votes cast.

The issue of gas drilling will be on the November ballot. For such a hotly contested race, it’s interesting to note that 8,400 voters turned out in the district out of 42,111 registered voters. That represents 19.95% of our registered voters, an impressive number for a May General Election.

United States (Arizona) – A man was killed Thursday morning when a plane crashed in southwest Arizona, according to the Somerton/Cocopah Fire Department and the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office. Both agencies responded to the area at 5:47 a.m., May 6th after a witness reported that a plane was down and there was an explosion, according to a SCFD press release. The plane, a single-engine Cessna according to YCSO, crashed in an agricultural field. SCFD firefighters quickly extinguished flames that had fully engulfed the plane.

One occupant, presumed to be the pilot, was found dead. He was identified as Travis Perkins, 27, of Flower Mound, Texas, according to the Yuma County Sheriff’s Office (YCSO).

Capt. Eben Bratcher, spokesman for YCSO, said Perkins had been pulled out of the plane by passers-by before emergency personnel arrived.

Perkins was pronounced dead at the scene by paramedics. Bratcher said Perkins was flying Thursday morning to drop sterile fruit files into Yuma County fields. Robby Rodriguez, SCFD spokesman, said it took about 10 minutes to extinguish the flames from the wreck and firefighters used the Compressed Air Foam system to put out the fire. The system is standard on their fire trucks, he said.

The cause of the crash is unknown, and the National Transportation Safety Board is en route to investigate the crash.

Woke up this morning to find no service on any of my Sprint phones. Now this is actually unusual and I’ve chided my friends on other networks who have experienced reliability issues. And unlike the Sprint of old, their customer service is actually pretty outstanding.

After holding on the line (office line) to Sprint Customer Service for several minutes I knew something larger was going on. When the tech rep came on the line, after the usual annoying query of my phone number, again, and security pin, they advised me that service was out in most of Texas, Louisiana, and Alabama.

She explained that they had ‘towers down’ all over the area. I’m sure there’s a better explanation that that, but that’s the way it is. After about 5 hours, service returned to normal and the messages started streaming through at 9:20AM CST
